Brief overview of program

The Department of Computer Science at Kent State University offers courses and curriculum leading to the Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science. This program meets the needs of both the student wishing to pursue a career immediately upon graduation and those students planning for graduate studies in computer science. The curriculum is aligned with the most recent ACM/IEEE-CS curriculum guidelines and as such offers a good balance of practical skills and underlying knowledge necessary for adapting to the ever and often changing needs of technology.

Admission to the Department is done through the Admissions office at Kent State University (www.kent.edu/addmissions).

Please send any questions, comments, or suggestions you have to cs-ugradinfo@cs.kent.edu.

NEW - A formal lab for CS 23021 will be offered this term (Spring 2006) as a Special Topics course (CS 29995 Lab for 23021). Those students taking CS 23021 this term are highly encouraged to take this lab. Send a note to cs-ugradinfo@cs.kent.edu for more information.

Computer Science and Philosophy have agreed to cross-listing two logic courses. Starting in Fall 2006 we will have two new CS electives courses, CS 31045 Formal Logic and CS 4/51045 Metalogic. These courses are regularly run in the Philosophy Department. In the mean time, the PHIL versions will count as upperdivison electives.

Fall 2005:

  • CS 31011 Discrete Math will no longer be offered. A new course CS 23022 Discrete Structures for Computer Science will take its place.
  • Students will need to obtain a grade of C or better in the introductory Computer Science course sequence CS 10051, CS 23021, and CS 33001. A C or better will be required in CS 10051 to take CS 23021 and a C or better will be required in CS 23021 to take CS 33001. A C or better will be required in CS 33001 to take any required upper division CS course.
  • CS 43101 Structure of Programming Language will become CS 33101. The number change better reflects course content and is akin to a similar change made to CS 33211 Operating Systems recently.

Starting in Fall 2006:

  • A formal lab component will be added to CS 23021 making it four credit hours. Additionally, the title of the course will be changed to "Computer Science I: Programming & Problem Solving".
  • The title for CS 33001 will be changing to "Computer Science II: Data Structures & Abstraction".
  • A formal lab component will be added to CS 49901 Capstone Project (4 credits) to allow more time for students to meet with team members and develop projects.
