Web Design & Programming Course Sequence

The Web and the Internet are two technologies driving many innovations and other aspects of contemporary life. The Web today is ubiquitous, in news and information, in government, in education, in business and commerce, in health, and in entertainment. Many people depend on the Web so completely that they cannot tolerate loss of access for even a brief period.

Recognizing the importance of the Web a decade ago, in 1999 the Computer Science Department, in collaboration with what is now the School of Visual Communication Design in the College of Communication and Information, developed an interdisciplinary three-course sequence in Web Design and Programming (WDP):

  1. CS 4/57105 Web Design and Programming I
  2. CS 4/57106 Web Design and Programming II
  3. CS 4/57107 Web Design and Programming Studio

This three-course sequence, or even simply the first course, provides a hands-on introduction to the creation of modern web sites, and can be taken by students in a wide variety of majors.

For students who want to learn more, the WDP Minor is available to majors in the College of Arts and Science and the VCD program.

This WDP sequence can serve as the core of a detailed course of study in Computer Science and Visual Communication Design to develop professionals in Web publishing; in the design, structure, programming, and maintenance of Web sites; and in languages, protocols, multimedia, security, and privacy aspects of the Web.
