Colloquium for Wednesday, November 18, 2009
Speaker: Dr. Joseph D. Ortiz, Department of Geology, Kent State University, Kent, OH

Title: The Arctic Response to Climate Change: Modeling and Data

Abstract: There is growing evidence from a variety of sources and fields of study indicating that the broad spectrum of human activities since at least the Industrial Revolution is progressively modifying Earth's natural climate variability. These conclusions are drawn on results from theoretical, observational, and computational studies using climate models of varying complexity. In this talk, I will present a brief overview on my paleoclimate research on natural, pre-anthropogenic climate variation, present observational data indicating anthropogenic or human-induced climate change since the start of the Industrial Revolution, and conclude with a description of some of the physical impacts of climate change in the Arctic.

  Time: Wednesday, November 18, 2009, 3:45 - 5:00 PM

  Place: MSB, Room 228
