Music
Music to me is an immersive experience. To really feel the power
of it you have to let it interact with every sense possible. Listen
to it, play it, hum it, tap it, paint it... in the words of T.S.
Eliot: “...You are the music while the music lasts...”
I enjoy listening to a variety of genres of music. Even though
languages across the globe are sometimes difficult to understand, the
language of music is universal. One can communicate complex emotions
through tapping sticks or strumming strings. One day I hope to
be able to express such emotions through the guitar and piano.
Singing
Emitting sounds from deep within ones soul and amplifying the rhythm of the heart... the feeling of singing in front of an audience is absolutely incredible! I have performed on various occasions in the past and the songs have been in many different languages. I like to try and imitate the various intonations. Sometimes words are more onomatopoeic in one language than another.
Dance Choreography
Dance is simply moving rhythmically to music. Humans have been able to establish dance forms that group series of movements and convey complex thoughts such as emotions, ideas, folklore, spirituality etc. ‘Bharatnatyam’ is one such classical dance form originating from India. Learning the art of expression through subtle facial and body movements requires many years of training and strict discipline.
Art
“Painting is silent poetry, and poetry is painting with the gift of speech.” - Simonides, Greek poet (556 BC - 468 BC). Art is what you make it – for me its painting, drawing, writing, crocheting, needlepoint, origami and much more. I'm a very visual person and I enjoy creating art from all kinds of things.
Reading
“A truly great book should be read in youth, again in maturity and once more in old age, as a fine building should be seen by morning light, at noon and by moonlight.” - Robertson Davies.
If I could, I would read books all day. Some of my personal favorites are Strange Orbit by Margaret Simpson, the Hitchhiker trilogy (containing 5 books) by Douglas Adams, A Suitable Boy by Vikram Seth, The God of Small Things by Arundhati Roy, and of course J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series.
Travelling
“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines, sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” - Mark Twain. If you get seasick, take a plane, train or automobile! So far I've set foot on 24 countries and hope to experience more.
