Grid Computing Proposed Survey Subjects
These are proposed topics for individual surveys/implementations.
These will involve reading background material on the topic including seeking more
recent literature on the web and in hardcopy. The result should be a survey paper of
the current status, together with a Powerpoint presentation
with referenes to any sources used.
Each presentation is expected to be an hour long with 15 minutes for discussion.
In addition the survey should involve instaling/implementing an environment/application from the
area and demonstarting it.
Possible Topics:
- Compare Grid portal toolkits, including GridLab GridSphere, NPACI Grid Portal Toolkit,
GPDK (defunct), etc. Identify all those available and document their features, and write and
evaluation. In addition, install one or more of the currently active toolkits and write a
simple application using it.
- Compare checkpointing and restart techniques for processes, clusters and grids. In particular,
Condor, LAM/MPI. CoCheck, GridCPR, XCAT. Describe their functionality and features, evalaute them,
and install one or more Grid suitable ones.
- Compare Grid, machine and network resource monitoring tools. Include GridRM, GridLab projects,
GRM, NWS, Netlogger etc. Evaluate their functionality and features and install one that is
suitable for use in a grid environemnt.
- Conduct a survey of deployed portals and applications for biology and medical sciences, including
medical image access and bioinformatics. Include BIRN, CEPAR, CEPost, EOL, eDiamond etc.
Describe the functionality and features and provide and access portal/web page to each, where the
functionality is described.
- Conduct a survey of grid based collaborative environments. Include AccessGrid, DISCOVER, GridBus
efforts etc, and applications which can be deployed with them. Install one or more environments.
- Compare public resource and grid computing in terms of features and functionality.
Describe some of the existing projects including SETI@home, folding@home, UCB/INtel study of Internet
Resources, BOINC etc. Install BOINC and configure a service.
In addition to those given on the Reference page, an extensive list of Grid literature is
