Research Interests & Statement

Works in Progress

Information Visualization of Categorical Data, Sep. 2011 to Present

We explored a novel methodology for categorical data visualization, which will convert a categorical dataset into a text corpus, and then migrate and extend text and document visualization techniques to visualize it. By regarding categorical values as keywords, the semantics carried by the data will be greatly preserved, in comparison to previous approaches quantifying categorical variables. We conduct extensive research on interactive visual exploration and visual analytics of categorical data. A working prototype of the proposed approach will be developed.

Skill needed: C++, OpenGL, QT.

Information Triage on Multi-Touch Surface, Jul. 2012 to Present

Information triage is the process of making rapid decisions about what they should pay closer attention to when most of the available information seems relevant. It's what happens when people have more information than time, which is true for almost everyone these days. We want to develop applications that will visually represent information collections and support rapid exploration, evaluation, and selection. This includes sorting, rearranging, filtering and other interactions in the information space by using multi-touch surface.

Skill needed: C++, Python, SQLite, JavaScript.

The Past Work

Search Behavior Interaction, Dec. 2011 to Jul. 2012

Our goal is to describe how search behavior changes as students receive professional training in domain-independent search expertise. More specifically, our objectives are to describe as, (a) behaviors learned during a semester of graduate-level instruction in professional search techniques, (b) the progression of learning, (c) related changes in student understanding of system functionality.

Skill needed: C++, JavaScript, QT, MySQL.

Dynamic Pattern Trace in Data Streams and Data Stream Clustering, Sep. 2008 to Jun. 2011

We proposed a method to discover and trace the dynamic patterns in the real-time data streams. The cluster results based on a grid-based method are described in n-dimension pattern trees. A pattern tree of the current time is compared with that of the previous ones to find the pattern variation including migration, splitting, merging and termination. And we proposed a novel data stream clustering algorithm. On the basis of damped window technology, we adopt data attenuation method and grid-base method to maintain and update the summary statistics of the data streams. Then an density-based algorithm is used to deal with clustering in data streams.

Skill needed: C++, Matlab, MySQL.
