This page is an annotated bibliography of scientific visualization web sites around the world. It is a service of the NAS (Numerical Aerospace Simulation) Facility at NASA Ames Research Center. Please note that this page is no longer maintained due to other obligations of NAS personnel. Many of the links and descriptions may be incorrect or out-of-date. Boston University's web site is primarily concerned with their own facilities.

Brown University Computer Graphics Group. This site describes the research performed here, which range from desktop 3D tools to immersive virtual reality environments.

Center for Applied Parallel Processing at the University of Colorado at Boulder. This web site contains examples of visualizations done at the center. Movies, pictures, and research papers are available. The

Center for Innovative Computer Applications (CICA) at the Indiana University Bloomington Campus. This extensive web site contains project descriptions, pictures, AVS related software, movies, and technical reports. Application areas are diverse.

CECARENA at ITESM - Campus Guaymas in Guaymas, Sonora, Mexico. This Web site is dedicated to the centralization, dissemination, and exchange of information and ideas on techniques that can produce computer-generated still and animated pictures of the marine environment that are based on real or simulated data.
Colorado State University Computer Visualization Lab. This web site is primarily aimed at potential users at Colorado State as it describes the facilities and personel very well. Of general interest are a couple of very large movies and HTML tutorials for some public domain software (e.g. xv, ximage, ...).

Cornell Theory Center Visualization. This URL contains pictures, movies, and list of personnel. The group makes extensive use of the IBM Data Explorer visualization system and WaveFront's Advanced Visualizer. There is a Data Explorer tutorial, an archive of modules, discipline specific networks and macros, and related materials. There are clear signs that more material will come on line in the future.

CoVis at Northwestern University describes the CoVis Project which enables students, teachers, and scientists to collaborate in atmospheric and environmental studies. Their specialized visualization software is discussed, and examples shown.

Das Deutsche Klimarechenzentrum (DKRZ) (the German climate research center) has some videos on climate related research and a description of their facilities.

Data Visualization Discussion Group at York University has information on a discussion group on statistically oriented visualization. One of the member of the group, Michael Friendly, has a home page with a lot of statistical graphics material, mostly related to SAS.

The Delft Technical University Scientific Visualization group homepage describes their work and has a complete publications listing from 1991, with many articles available for download.

Dr. Michael Prisant's page at Duke University. This web site contains images, videos, and html descriptions of a number of chemistry related visualizations. This work includes using parallel processing to ray cast computational chemistry results. There is a copywrite notice on this web site.

Electronic Visualization Laboratory at the University of Illinois at Chicago has lots of slick html pages with descriptions of demos, projects and so forth. There are images and videos, but the technical papers are references -- not online versions. Lots of interesting work, but the web site has more flash and less substance than EVL is capable of.

A Gallery of Interactive On-Line Geometry The Geometry Center also has an incredible page with links to their interactive, web-based, visualizations of various mathematical objects. Interaction is slow due to the network, but these forms-based programs are well worth looking at.

Georgia Tech's Scientific Visualization Lab. This site highlights the SciVis Lab of Georgia Tech. It is collaborative with, but not part of, the GVU Center (see above). It includes comprehensive descriptions of their research projects in SciVis technologies and their applications to course development.

Graduate Institute of International Studies, Geneva, Switzerland has a project to visualize and navigate the WWW.

Graphics, Visualization, and Usability Center at Georgia Tech. This extensive web site includes SciVis work along with material from related fields such as animation, virtual environments, medical informatics, software visualization, user interface software, multimedia, educational technology, human factors, and hypertext. Plenty of content here.

The Imaging Technology Group (formerly Beckman Institute Visualization Facility) provides state-of-the-art imaging facilities for researchers at the University of Illinois and develops advanced imaging technologies with an emphasis on remote and automated instrument control.

Institute for Visualization and Perception Research at the University of Massachusetts Lowell has a number of interesting projects. The page is a good summary of their work.

Institute of Mathematics and Computer Science in Medicine (IMDM) showcases their research into visualization of human anatomy, with an emphasis on their Voxel-Man Atlas, a volumetric graphical database of human anatomy. This site contains lots of images and movies of medical interest.

The International AVS Centre site provides useful information about Advanced Visual Systems' products AVS/Express, AVS5 and Gsharp. Included on the site are approximately 800 public-domain modules and projects to enable users to extend the systems AVS/Express and AVS5, and also downloadable training materials in both AVS5 and AVS/Express.

International Cartographic Association's Commission on Visualization is a university-affiliated commission to examine the role of visualization in cartography. This site serves to disseminate the results of their research.

The 9th International Symposium on Flow Visualization takes place in Edinburgh, Scotland, August 22 - 26, 2000.

Lab for Scientific Visual Analysis at Virginia Tech. This web site has substantial materials on visualization used for scientific research and, especially, education. Of particular interest are the many student projects.

Leeds University IRIS Explorer Centre of Excellence contains a variety of useful material for IRIS Explorer users. Products to download include the COVISA suite of modules which extend IRIS Explorer to collaborative working. There is a repository of user-contributed modules.

Leeds University Visualization Research Group performs research in a variety of visualization areas, including collaborative visualization, accuracy, problem-solving environments for science and engineering, physical modelling in web-based virtual environments, and web-based visualization. Implementation of research ideas is done using IRIS Explorer extensions, along with VRML and Java 3D. The Web page contains research descriptions, small screen shots, and links to papers.

MIT Aero/Astro Scientific Visualization This web site is home to Visual2, Visual3, and pV3. These are visualization systems for unsteady, unstructured (and structured) CFD visualization (mostly). Visual2 is for 2D flows, Visual3 for 3D flows, and pV3 takes data from solvers on distributed workstations on the fly. There are papers, software, and users manuals. The author assures me that pictures will be coming. The software is binary and libraries only, not source code.

Mississippi State University Engineering Research Center for Computational Field Simulation has images and movies from computational fluid dynamics, the environment, and medicine.

NC Dept. of Public Instruction and NC State University have designed a Scientific Visualization curriculum for high schools in North Carolina. Their web site provides resources for integrating graphics with science education, especially for teachers of science, drafting, technical graphics, and technology.

Neural Signal Processing Group. This is the homepage for the Human Brain Project at the Technical University of Denmark. Included are software and visualization from functional neuroimaging presented in VRML, as images and as MPEG movies.

The Nonlinear Magnification Home Page, focuses on (in the words of the author) "the fundamental process that is central to the many techniques which have been described by such names as fisheye views and distortion-oriented presentatiol". This site is a central information repository for nonlinear magnification. Note that while this page is housed at Indiana University, the work is supported soley by the page's author, Alan Keahey.

The Ohio State Volume Graphics Research Group. This well organized web site contains substantial content in a nice, simple structure. Visualization work centers on volume visualization (particularly ray-casting). The web site contains most, if not all, of the results of this productive research group.

ParVis Visualization Project at the Australian National University web site focuses on volume rendering using a message passing, distributed memory, parallel machine.

Penn State Gas Dynamics Lab This web page includes many unique color images of high-speed flow visualizations, industrial applications of nozzles and jets, and the airflow around the human body. Full descriptions of the staff, facilities, and research in progress are included.

Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center Gallery contains some interesting MPEG animations of studies done at the PSC, including tornados, astrophysical accretion disks, and the earth's magnetic field.

The REINAS Project at the University of California at Santa Cruz. The REINAS project involves Monterey Bay environmental data aquisition, management, and visualization. The web site includes some pretty pictures, descriptions of facilities, equipment and staff, many mpeg movies of current profile data from the Monterey Bay, and concept, requirements and design documents for the system.

Rutgers VizLab. This web site contains pictures, movies, html descriptions of projects and software, a faculty list, and upcomming events. This lab has done excellent work in feature detection. They plan to add research papers in the future. The

SHASTRA collaborative modelling and visualization environment at the University of Texas. This web site contains descriptions of software and projects, pictures, and many mpeg movies. There are instructions for obtaining the software, but you cannot get the software through the web.

SLVG (Santa_Cruz Laboratory for Visualization and Graphics) is the home page for the Visualization Lab at U.C. Santa Cruz. Included are comprehensive discussions on research topics in a variety of areas, some of which include animal modeling, environmental applications, volume visualization, uncertainty visualization, and collaborative visualization.

Se.La.Vi.The SciEntific LAb for VIsualization, at the National Technical University of Athens' Departments of Mechanical Engineering, Fluids Sectionm contains images, animated GIFs, videos (AVI format), and VRML worlds of various simulated mechanical systems, such as internal combustion engines, propellers, and wind turbines. It also contains the Se.La.Vi. visualization software, downloadable for Windows.

Space Science and Engineering Center (SSEC) of the University of Wisconsin-Madison focuses on Earth science. Nice web site includes Internet available software packages Vis5D and VisAD.

Stanford Computer Graphics Laboratory. Good projects, pictures, movies, software, technical papers and descriptions of some of the graphics work at Stanford University.

State University of New York at Stony Brook

Swiss Center for Scientific Computing, Visualization Laboratory at ETH Zurich, Switzerland. This lab is engaged in visualization projects in collaboration with a variety of different faculties. This Web page focuses on their research on fluid flow visualization. Information on current research and images on CFD visualization for turbomachinery flows can be found here.

Sydney Regional Scientific Visualisation Laboratory in Australia has a good deal of interesting looking work.

Technical University Vienna This web page contains interesting visualizations of many complex dynamical systems.

U.C. Davis Visualization and Graphics Group This site features this group's research and teaching program in scientific visualization and its focus on large-scale data visualization, multiresolution methods, geometric modeling, parallel visualization, and virtual reality.

U.C. San Diego's Advanced Scientific Visualization Lab's Website describes their research, facilities, and staff.

University of Kaiserslautern workgroup for Computer Graphics and Computer Aided Geometric Design. This site is primarily concerned with computer graphics but there is a little scivis maerial. Some of the pages are in German, particularly those describing facilities.

University of Aizu, Japan has a nice site on functional representation in geometric modeling.

University of Minnesota

The University of Minnesota Supercomputing Institute Scientific Visualization and Graphics Web page. This web site contains pointers to URLs of interest to the scientific visualization community, such as software packages, descriptions of techniques, tutorials, and data formats.

The Geometry Center, University of Minnesota. This excellent web site contains examples of, software for, and technical and other information about some of the premier mathematical visualizations on the planet.

University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill has a large number of interesting projects in augmented reality, nanomanipulation, ultrasound visualization and other areas. This is a strong program well worth study.

University of Stuttgart Computing Centre highlights their visualization group's facilities and work in visual data analysis, including their work on COVISE, a distributed, collaborative visualization environment.

University of Texas at San Antonio Combustion Chaos Group has some nice visualizations of flame.

University of Utah, Department of Computer Science, has affiliated Websites that describe their computer graphics and visualization program, their Center for Scientific Computing and Imaging , and the Advanced Visualization Technology Center, in which they partner with Los Alamos National Laboratory and Argonne National Laboratory.

VU is a scientific visualization program for the display and analysis of numerical solutions, with widely-varying applications on various UNIX platforms. It is the result of research performed at CIRCA (Centre for Research on Computation and its Applications), under the auspices of the University of Montreal and other academic institutions. The Web site includes an image gallery and a a user manual; VU is free of charge to academia.
VolVis. This site from the Visualization Laboratory at the State University of New York at Stony Brook highlights their work in volume rendering techniques, with an emphasis on their VolVis system for volume visualization in scientific applications. The source and executables are available along with many full papers in compressed PostScript format.

Worcester Polytechnic Institute's Visualization Research Web site. Dr. Matt Ward's page at Worcester Polytechnic Institute provides descriptions and access to several data visualization tools, including XmdvTool and SpiralGlyphics, developed by him and his students.

Zuse Institute Berlin (ZIB), Department of Scientific Visualization. This web site describes the continuing development of the academic version of Amira, software for data visualization and 3D image analysis, as well as applications in medicine, biology, biochemistry, physics and engineering. The VisInfo project established a WWW information service specializing in scientific visualization. Among other information it provides a calendar with conference announcements.

Government Laboratories (International)

Software Technology for Fluid Mechanics at the Deutsche Forschungsanstalt fuer Luft- und Raumfahrt. There is some interesting shock visualizing work, including a paper. There is also co-operative visualization work and a description of a flow visualization system called HIGHEND. The most detailed HIGHEND paper is in German, but most of the web site is in English.

CRS4: Centre for Advanced Studies Research and Development in Sardinia (Cagliari, Italy). This extensive web site contains pictures, movies, projects, staff, research papers, and hypertextual MPEG info. A few papers are in Italian, but most of the web site is in English.

Centre for Scientific Computing (CSC), Espoo, Finland This web site contains a number of movies and images of molecular, molecular biological, and viral processes along with at least one research paper. The usual facilities and staff descriptions are there too. Also of note at the same site is the Chemist's Art Gallery. Click here to go to CSCs home page.

Demographic Aspects and Consequences of the Aids Epidemic is a site from the National Institute of Demographics in Paris that features interactive generation of 2D graphics, for a study of "demographic and epidemiological conditions [which can] turn population growth of an HIV infected African population negative".

Deutsche Forschungsanstalt fuer Luft- und Raumfahrt Software Technology for Fluid Mechanics, Scientific Visualization. This small web site has some interesting work on visualizing shocks plus a description of HIGHEND, a visualization system with co-operative capabilities. HIGHEND's detailed documentation is in German but a summary is available in English.

European Community Joint Research Centre in Italy. This web site has personel and project descriptions along with a few images. There are also several mpeg movies, including the global weather over Africa for July 92 (my favorite). The work is by the visualization group at the Institute for Informatics and System Engineering.

ICASE

ICASE Visualization and Graphics Highlights. This web site contains a large number of images with descriptions and (frequently) pointers to full papers. There is at least one mpeg movie. The work is somewhat eclectic with an emphasis on fluid dynamics and parallel processing.

Mathematical Visualization by David Banks This web site contains Dr. Banks' dissertation and pointers to related work. A number of interesting mathematical visualizations of 4-dimensional spaces can be found here.

The Italian Aerospace Research Centre, or Centro Italiano Ricerche Aerospaziali (CIRA), Web site describes their work in aerospace data visualization in support of Italy's National Programme for Aerospace Research Activities. Descriptions of their activities include their latest product flow visualization system FLOVIS 4.0, as well as virtual reality applications for simulations and training. Several representative images are included.
Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory Imaging and Distributed Computing Group. This web site contains some html research papers, images, and movies. There is a paper on visualization of MRI images. There is also some educational material: the "Whole Frog" project and the "Video Microscope" project.

Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory's web site has lots of images, papers, and some software. Lots of interesting visualization techniques here!

Visualization and Computation System (VCS) developed for the Program for Climate Model Diagnosis and Intercomparison (PCMDI) at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. The VCS is an interface for selection, manipulation and display of scientific data for the PCMDI.

Data and Dimensions Interface (DDI) was inspired by the VCS (see above), and is used for converting between a number of publicly available file formats, and writing to public domain and commercial visualization systems.

Los Alamos National Laboratory Advanced Computing Lab. This web site contains a description of staff and facilites and and number of pictures with brief explainations.

NASA Ames Research Center

NASA Ames Biocomputation Center does a very nice job of covering the center's work, including 3D visualizations of neural structures derived from real data. As a nice touch, the original data (images) taken by the electron microscopes are online so you can reproduce their work from the raw data. (December 1994)

The Marsoweb Mars Surveyor Landing Sites Website contains a suite of online visualization and analysis tools for Mars data, both for global datasets, and for resources specific to landing site selection for the Mars Explorer Rover 2003 missions.

NASA's Numerical Aerodynamic Simulation Division (NAS)

NAS Visualization Technology The NAS Visualization Technology group's page. It contains some sample images and movies, as well as descritpions of projects and facilities.

NAS visualization describes some of the visualization work at NAS.

NAS Division Technical Summaries. This web site is contains short descriptions, including pictures, of a few examples of computational research conducted at the NAS. The focus is on the computation rather than the visualization.

Flow Analysis Software Toolkit (FAST) This web site contains extensive information on FAST, an end user visualization system particularly suited to CFD developed by the NAS.

NASA Goddard Space Flight Center

Scientific Applications and Visualization Branch. This web site describes facilities, projects, and future plans.

NSSDC/Examples of CDF Applications includes links to WWW-based data systems with interactive visualization of interplanetary and near-Earth space physics data.

Public Use of Remote Sensing Data Program was established to encourage the development of innovative applications of earth and space science remote sensing data. The RSD web site includes an Image Catalog and a Movie Catalog of visualizations of satellite data.

GLOBE Visualization Project. The GLOBE Visualization server provides images of environmental data worldwide. Some of the images are of measurements by students in the GLOBE Program, while others are reference data from the Environmental Modeling Center (EMC) or from satellites in Earth orbit. Currently, we are displaying 9 reference and 14 student datasets. Images are available for the entire world. One week of images are kept on the server, and short MPEG animations showing the current week's data are available.

National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR). This web site contains a couple of pictures, a movie, and extensive documentation for the NCAR graphics package.

NCAR Visualization Group This Web page highlights their visualization labs and projects in geophysics, biology, climatology, and collaborative and distributed visualization.

National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA)

NCSA Visualization and Virtual Environments page . This extensive web site contains pictures, movies, descriptive text, and research papers. Visualization work covers a wide variety of application areas.

NCSA Digital Information Systems Overview contains many visualizations.

NCSA Virtual Reality Lab briefly describes some VR projects including some scientific visualization. There are also some research papers.

National Physical Laboratory in the UK has a Centre for Materials Measurement and Technology, with several projects in visual modelling and data visualisation related to materials science. The Website includes demonstrations of a variety of these visual models concerned with the simulation of damage evolution in composite materials using a Java / VRML 3D interface.

Naval Postgraduate School web site is primarily geared for in-house users.

Oak Ridge National Lab (ORNL) has a number of various visualizations of the Clinch River system in Tennessee. These visualizations are being used to find pollutants released by the Manhattan Project. ORNL also has a Web site for their Visualization Lab.

Pictures by Jean-Francois Colonna @ GSV-LACTAMME, France Telecom CNET. This web site contains many, many beautiful pictures and videos, most with scientific content but little explanation.

Sandia National Laboratories supports visualization research on a variety of fronts, including massively parallel applications, virtual reality, and computational engineering and biomedical applications. Included are several sample images and movies from applications including comet impact simulations, oil exploration studies, and medical volumetric data, including the "Visible Human" CT dataset.
SARA Visualization Center: the national visualization facility for the Dutch scientific community. Besides describing their facility, there is a comparison of different commercial visualization packages.

U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Scientific Visualization Center supports EPA researchers, clients, and partners in scientific visualization. This site includes descriptions of the facilities, projects, and tools. It includes a gallery of images and MPEGs from their past and current projects.

USGS Coastal Ocean Modeling has some nice pictures and videos.

Visual Computing Group for the Italian National Research Council (CNR). This site showcases this group's research activities in computer graphics and volume visualization. It includes discussions of algorithms, example images, and downloadable software.

Commercial

AVS home page. This web site have excellent information on the Advanced Visualization System (AVS). AVS is the original and most widely used data flow visual programming system for visualization. (December 1994)

ATNF Visualisation Software discusses the visualisation software in use at the Australia Telescope National Facility.

Baird & Associates specialize in software services and products primarily for use in hydrological modeling studies. Their website contains sample animations of the applications of their X-Vision (UNIX) and Baird Animator (Windows) software, and descriptions and images of their various projects.

CoHort Software produces CoPlot, an extremely versatile program for creating publication-quality scientific graphs, maps, and technical drawings. CoPlot can be used as a standalone program or you can get access to CoPlot procedures from other programs (notably, Java, Perl, Python, Rexx, and Tcl programs) or from the command line.

COVISE, from VirCinity, is a visualisation environment that allows remote collaboration, distributed processing and visualisation, and the analysis of results in virtual reality environments.

Ensight from Computational Engineering International (CEI), is a general-purpose package for the visualization of scientific and engineering data, particularly for CFD and FEA results. Features range from plotting to virtual reality. Versions exist for UNIX, Linux, and Windows NT. The web site has a thorough description of the product and some pictures and animations.

Flometrics is an engineering firm for CFD and thermodynamics solutions. They have examples of 3D flow visualization around a prolate spheroid, and surface flow pattern visualization with topological features.

4D Visual is a solution developed by Unified Field, Inc. that enables the display of multiple, real time data streams in one 3D information environment. One example application is the use of this technology for showing "historical and real time financial data in a constantly evolving 3 dimensional environment. The screens never look the same and you are able to identify patterns from seemingly unrelated pieces of data."

GAB Consulting's Website contains downloadable visual interactive programs that employ the direct sumulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) method for physically realistic simulations of subsonic and supersonic gas flows.

GiD is billed as a "universal, adaptive and user-friendly graphical user interface for geometrical modelling, data input and visualisation of results for all types of numerical simulation programs".

IBM Open Visualization Data Explorer (DX) is a modular data flow visualization system (now open source!). The site has good descriptions, documentation, downloads, examples of results, and pointers to sites with additional DX-related materials.

ILOG Views and ILOG JViews are graphics libraries that allow users to construct rich 2D graphical user interfaces in C++ and Java respectively, allowing display and interaction with maps, networks, spreadsheets, etc.

The Khoral Research, Inc. web site contains everything one might want to know about the Khoros system including electronic access to the software. Khoros is a data flow visualization system with a visual programming language interface.

The Lateiner Dataspace web site contains papers in HTML format and other documents which relate to research performed at Lateiner Dataspace on subjects such as stereoscopic volume visualization and the visualization of discrete physical simulation models. It includes many pictures, as well as a link to their FTP site, where one can find demonstration software.

LMI has a patented approach to data visualization called GIFI®. They do consulting and have a product that is an Excel Add-in for prototyping and developing GIFIC® based displays.

Lifesmith Classic Fractals is a company that specializes in all manner of products with fractal designs and pictures. Included in this Web site are veritable oodles of majestic fractal pictures created by Lifesmith, as well as discussions of the mathematics used to generate them, comprehensive bibliographies of fractal books and papers, and highlights of specific types of fractals and techniques.

MATLAB Gallery. This web site contains visualizations created using MATLAB -- a scientific and engineering software tools specializing in matrix manipulations. There are a number of nice images, some with decent explainations.

Metazoa Systemsprovides Web-based eNotebook and eCollaboration tools for scientists and medical researchers. Metazoa's software allows scientist to manage and organize their data, author and share protocols, and collaborate in a secure environment. In addition, Metazoa hosts the largest user-submitted protocol library on the Internet.

Mountain Dog Software is showing their product PC-VolumeViewer for Windows 9x/NT, supporting real-time, direct volume rendering for medical imaging and multimedia software. Demos, samples, and rendering time statistics are included.

The MR/1 Multiscale Analysis software package is based on the book "Image and Data Analysis: the Multiscale Approach", Starck, Murtagh and Bijaoui, Cambridge University Press 1998. The Web page links to "Examples of Applications and Results" produced with this package, in astronomy, medicine, remote sensing, finance, etc.

NeoVision Hypersystems, Inc. is currently shipping two products for financial visualization: Heatmaps® -- live "pictures" of financial information used by leading traders, analysts and portfolio managers; and NeoFARM® -- a graphical "Big Brother" system for monitoring the risks and activities from global trading floors, institutional portfolios and exchanges.

New River Kinematics produces MoluCAD, a 3D molecular modeling and visualization tool for chemistry students. Users can quickly generate models, view them from any perspective, and create reaction animations.
Nordic Society of Visualized Reality (NSVR) is a Web site for people and companies can share their applied visualization projects with the public, as well as a public forum for discussions in visualization research and implementation.

NVision Software Systems has a visualization tool kit, NV3D, that is an Active X component for visualizing information (data) in 3D. Their tool kit has been used to create an interactive web site management environment, to illustrate corporate network resources, and displaying class hierarchies, function calls, and inheritance in code. NV3D allows nesting to permit the user to view information, then dig down to view this information in greater detail. Also, it is superior to traditional 2D or tree diagrams because using three dimensions allows NV3D to show cross links between data.

O-Matrix, from Harmonic Software, is a Matlab-compatible high-performance interactive analysis and visualization environment, apparently able to run Matlab© scripts and functions 3 to 10 times faster than the Mathworks program.

PV-DesignPro is a Windows-based progam that simulates photovoltaic energy systems, with user-configurable climate and system design. Its numerous output options are in the form of tables and graphs. The Web page has a complete description of the system, along with various screen shots.

Research Systems, Inc.. RSI produces the Interactive Data Language (IDL) package, a venerable graphics application development environment in the science and engineering communities, which includes math and statistics libraries, and a GUI builder. This Web site also highlights RSI's more recent offerings, including an earth science-oriented image analysis product, and a software toolkit for digital terrain models.

Scimation is a small company which creates scientific animations and visualizations primarily for biomedical and aerospace clients.

Seabed Visualization is the theme of this Website from Paul Chapman, a research engineer at Sonar Research & Development Ltd. in the UK.

Tecplot is the home page for this interactive visualization environment for analyzing and displaying technical data. Tecplot integrates basic plotting and graphing with advanced scientific visualization techniques.

Template Graphics Software's home page describes their 3D desktop applications, and developer toolkits for visualization, including 3D-MasterSuite for C++ and Java, which provides classes for basic charting as well as high-end visualization requirements.

TeraRecon, Inc. develops systems for professional imaging applications, with an emphasis on medical markets. Products include the VolumePro accelerator boards for real-time 3D volume rendering for medical, geoscientific, and industrial imaging markets, and 3D workstations and servers for medial imaging.

3DVIEWNIX Home Page. This web site is home to a medically oriented visualization software product sold by the Medical Image Processing Group of the University of Pennsylvania. The web site includes movies, description of the software, downloadable demos, library reference manual, list of personnel, ordering information, etc.

"Toward a Perceptual Science of Multidimensional Data Visualization: Bertin and Beyond" is a treatise on how knowledge of human visual perception and physiology can lead to more effective visualizations, and is based on Bertin's (1983) Image Theory. It is written by Dr. Marc Green of ERGO/GERO Human Factors Science.
Tunnelling Visualization Software, describes the visualization component of the Austrian Joint Research Initiative "Numerical Simulation in Tunnelling" project. This Web page shows how this software is being developed to display tunnelling simulation results and geometry, and geological features which are important for tunnelling.

Urban Data Solutions creates high resolution 3-D models of urban landscapes for visualization and analysis by planners, defense contractors, real estate professionals, graphic artists, and telecom experts.

Visible Decisions Inc. provides a toolkit for developing 3D interactive "information visualizations" of corporate data.

Visual Kinematics, Inc. This site covers their product quite well, including a moderate sized image gallery. The product is a visualization system and libraries that may be included in other products, such as solvers. This product is aimed at the finite element market.

Visual Numerics, Inc.is the developer of PV-WAVE and JWAVE visualization tools, as well as the IMSL numerical and statistics libraries.

Visualization DataBlade This site showcases the Visualization DataBlade Module from ECOlogic Corporation. This module plugs in to their INFORMIX-Universal Server database system and provides a suite of data visualization and analysis functions. The site includes demos of Web-based querying, data extraction and 2D plotting.

Military

Army High Performance Computing Research Center. This web site contains pictures, movies, descriptions of software, projects, and staff, but no research papers. Many of the visualizations come with enough information to gain at least a superficial understanding. A wide variety of application areas are represented.

Army Research Laboratory Scientific Visualization Team. This web site contains pictures, movies, descriptions of the facility, projects, and staff, but no research papers. Most of the visualizations are weapons-related.

Naval Research Laboratory Visualization Lab. This web site contain images, movies, and description of facilities and staff. There are no research papers.

Realization Reports by Larry Rosenblum from the Office of Naval Research European Office. This is newsletter devoted to European and Middle Eastern activities in data visualization, virtual reality, and related technologies.

Topscene is a 3D battefield visualization system that lets aircrew and battle commanders rehearse their missions in the contingency area before going into combat. This web site contains a description of the system, screen shots of the system, and videos of sample interactive sessions.

Visualization Using GRASS GIS (U.S. Army Construction Engineering Research Laboratories). This web site contains pictures, animations, brief explanations, links to an online manual for GRASS (Geographic Resources Analysis Support System), but no research papers. You can also get a demo of one module of GRASS. Current visualization examples include surface modeling, erosion modeling, rainfall runoff, keyframe animation, and global images. The visualizations are accompanied by enough information to understand them, at least at a superficial level.
