Syllabus Specific- Intuitive Calculus, Sections 004 and 006, Fall 2009 |
|
The textbook is Brief Applied Calculus fifth edition by Geoffrey Berresford and Andrew Rockett. I have been told that the fourth and fifth editions are similar with regard to the text material, but they may differ with respect to the exercises.
Homework will be assigned on a regular basis, but it will not be collected. It is hoped that you will attempt the exercises, and if your answers do not match those at the back of the text, then you will ask the instructor or someone else for assistance. Worked-out solutions to some of the exercises are given at this website under "Chapter X Exercises".
There will be three exams and a final. Each exam will be worth 120 points, and the final will be worth 220 points. In addition, unannounced quizzes will be given. You will be able to drop two quiz scores, and the remaining quizzes will be worth 120 points. Thus, there will be 700 points possible for the course.
(This paragraph was added on 7 October.) Instead of earning 120 points via quizzes, you may earn 120 points by doing homework. Starting on 8 October, there will be to-be-turned-in assignments given in class. These assignments in-total will be worth 120 points. If you do these assignments and the quizzes, then your course grade will be calculated with the better of the quiz-grade or the homework-grade. Homework assignments given on a Thursday and the following Tuesday will be due the next Friday.
The dates for the exams are Thursday, 24 September; Thursday, 22 October; and Thursday, 19 November. The final exam for the morning 9:15-10:30 class will be Thursday morning, 17 December, 7:45-10:00a.m., and the final exam for the afternoon/evening class will be Tuesday afternoon/evening, 15 December, 5:45-8:00p.m.
Make-up exams may be given when there is a written verification of a university-accepted excuse for missing the exam.
