The Chart Method

Chart based story problem soving requires five steps.

First, select the appropriate formula(s) for the problem. This is done by reading the problem statement (See the lower right window.) looking for "keywords" that appear in one or more standard formulas (See the lower left window). Some words may be exact matches such as "wage(s)." Others may be "clues" such as "days," "hours," and "minutes" imply the keyword "time." The word "per" usually implies a "rate" as in "dollars per hour." - Sometimes stated as "$5 an hour."

So for example, the problem in the lower right window implies the formulas in the lower left window with 2, 3, 1, 2 and 2 matches respectively. Since the second formula has the most terms matched, it is selected.

The second step builds the table.
