In Anglish, calculations can be expressed in natural language, as:

        wage$ are equal to the rate$ times the time$.

However, frequently, it is easier and more concise to express the calculations algebraically by solving the formula(s) and putting the item to be determined (the unknown) on the left. For example,

        wage$ = rate$ X time$.
