Variable Names

The letters that stand for unknowns in algebra are replaced by variable names in Anglish formulas and statements. In order to expand the number of available names and to allow names which can be spoken, names longer than one letter are often used. Subscripts which are used in mathematics are not practical in Anglish because they are hard to type and print and very difficult to pronounce. Instead Anglish uses multiword names such as 'over time' and 'over wage.' Note that 'over time' is a multiword name, but 'overtime' is a single word name. In Anglish, they are two different names! In algebraic formulas it is common to drop the multiply operator symbol, X (or *). Thus 'rate X time' would be 'rate time'. If this were allowed in Anglish, there would be no way to distinguish between two names multiplied together and a multiword name. Therefore, 'rate X time' is the rate column multiplied by the time column, but 'rate time' is a multiword column name.
