WME Client-Side MeML Page Processor: Woodpecker

What is Woodpecker

Woodpecker is a browser plugin for MeML pages. It is written in C++ and versions for Internet Explorer (IE) and Netscape Navitagor (NN) on Windows and on Unix will be made available.

Woodpecker is a key component of the WME framework and has been designed and developed by Dr. Xiao Zou of ICM/Kent.

Who Needs Woodpecker

Anyone who wish to access MeML pages on the Web needs to install Woodpecker. The situation is just like you need RealOne player for Real video/audio and you need Sun Java plugin for Applets.

If someone visits an MeML page (page.meml) without the Woodpecker plugin, your browser will prompt you to download and install Woodpecker automatically.

Prototype Release for Middle School Pilot Project

This is the very first prototype release (alpha release) of Woodpecker for experimentation in our WME pilot project with Kimpton middle school in Stow Ohio. The prototype works with IE and NN (?) on Windows only.

After downloading, simply follow the dialog boxes to intall Woodpecker.

  1. To download woodpecker and install for Internet Explorer, click this link then chose open.

  2. After Woodpacker installation, please visit this MeML sample page to verify that Woodpecker is indeed working for your browser.
