This course is an integrative experience that brings together all components of the undergraduate computer science curriculum in an applied, hands on real world setting. The course is three credits lecture and one credit lab. Prerequisite: CS 45201, 43901, 33006,43005.
In particular, we will work in project teams to design and implement a middleware library for cluster computing.
Course Requirements
Working in a group (4-5 members) design, implement, and demonstrate a middleware library for cluster computing. A large part of the library exists as C code. The main task will be to add a user interface to the library and possible to extended the functionality of the library.
The initial phase of the course will be a series of exercises designed to acquaint the class with the existing library code. Weekly assignment during the initial phase will count 15% of the class grade.
After the initial phase, the project teams will produce an initial report describing their project, its goals and a time line for its implementation. Over the course of the rest of the semester that report will be update with completed software and documentation. Reports are submitted as wiki pages and source code to the class svn classes.cs.kent.edu/capstoneF11.
After the initial phase, approximately every two weeks each team will present a progress report to the class discussing what they have accomplished and discussing any revisions in project time lines and goals.Each member of the team will also submit a weekly report describing what he/she did to advance the project during that week. The project reports (biweekly team reports and weekly team member reports)will account for 70% of the class grade. The team reports will be posted on the wiki and given verbally in class. The weekly member reports will be upload to the student's directory on the svn by Tuesday each week. The grades for a biweekly project reports and the weekly member reports will be determined by quality of the implementation and the clarity of the report. Each member of the team will be expected to present part of the report.
Class and Lab Participation (class presentation, lab interactions, lab productivity, class discussions, finding solutions to posted problems, etc): 15% of the grade.
The class time and lab time are for planning, trouble shooting, and problem solving, not for project coding. Students are expected to do most of their development work outside of classes and lab. When project development has started evidence of weekly code development is required.
A note on late homework. Late homework will be accepted and graded, time permitting, but it will not receive any more credit than the lowest score of the homework that was handed in on time and may be capped at a lower score than that.
