"When I first heard of the GED Scholars Initiative program, I didnít fully understand that there were people out there who were truly concerned about getting GED students back into school so their future could be brighter. The process of getting back into school seemed out of my reach because I lacked the experience and I had no idea what was involved. Their mission is to support GED graduates who are planning to attend Kent State University by giving advice and information about the procedures and processes for being accepted into KSU. With the help of the staff, future students never need to worry about how to fill out paperwork or apply online for financial aid. The GEDSI make sure that GED graduates receive ongoing support and guidance while promoting a positive, successful learning experience. The staff at GEDSI went above and beyond to make sure I received all the help I needed. It didnít matter what obstacle was in my way, they guided me through the difficulties and supported every choice I made."

-Melinda Francois, first-generation college student - GED Scholar

Vision: The GED Scholars Initiative is the first of its kind in the nation. It was created by the Ohio Literacy Resource Center to address the specific needs of students who earn their GED and attend Kent State University

The GED Scholars Initiative, located on the Kent Campus, helps GED graduates transition to college by offering academic, financial, and social support. GED graduates can take advantage of the many programs GEDSI has to offer. The GED Scholars Initiative also offers the Peer to Peer mentoring program where new students can find guidance and support from successful GED-holding college students.

Bridges to College Program
The Bridge Program is an optional five-day program designed to help GED graduates prepare for college by learning about admissions, financial aid, and academic advising. Students learn study strategies, tour the Kent State campus, and begin the application process.
