Doctoral Student Presentation:
Example-Based Texture Synthesis

Zakia Tamimi

Example-based texture synthesis, in its simplest form, is to extend 2D texture image in space to create a larger image or patch with the same texture. Almost everyone had some texture synthesis experience when they created a web page with background image, although trivial since simple tile-based replication rarely produces plausible results. In this presentation we introduce the problem of texture synthesis in 2D and present some of the basic algorithms used for this purpose. We then turn to the more exciting extensions of this problem such as: texturing surfaces for 3D objects, temporal extending of texture to create animation, and combining both texture synthesis and fluid dynamics to create fluids texturing.

Note: this presentation is based on ACM SIGGRAPH 2007 course 15.
