The undergraduate curriculum in computer science is designed to meet the needs of students who wish to pursue a career immediately after graduation and the needs of students who plan to attend graduate school in computer science. The curriculum provides students with a well balanced training in software development, a comprehensive knowledge of a variety of computer languages, and the theoretical foundations of computer science.
An undergraduate specializing in computer science will begin with calculus and programming, although some students will require college algebra and trigonometry. Well-prepared students are encouraged to establish credit in elementary courses by passing advanced placement examinations. The intermediate level courses (2XXXX-3XXXX) include further training in programming and data structures, introduction of a variety of different computer languages, linear algebra, and discrete mathematics. These courses provide the practical background for the software development and theory courses which are covered at the advanced undergraduate level (4XXXX).The Department of Computer Science provides an essentially open computer network to students who have completed their intermediate level computer courses. Through this network, a student can access and use a variety of state-of-the-art computers. This provides advanced undergraduate students with the means to participate in realistic software projects thereby enhancing their employability.
