The Department of Computer Science offers three introductory courses that have the word "computer" in the title. Choosing among them based only on the title can be confusing. Adding to the confusion some of the courses are undergoing title and other changes.
Each of the courses is intended for a specific audience. You should figure out what course to take based on what audience you fit into.

This class is for non-computer science majors.
This is a general introduction to using the computer. Various microcomputer applications are shown. Many of the issues, terms, and concepts of computers are covered.
The work involves homework, lab assignments using the computer, etc. Microcomputers (PC's etc.) are currently used with internet, word processing and spreadsheets covered. No programs are written.
Computer science majors cannot receive credit for this course.
This course is an overview of computer science. The course starts with algorithms and shows how hardware, software, programming languages, and applications are realizations of algorithms.
It is a required course for computer science majors (replacing the CS 10061 requirement) and a prequisite for CS 23021 Intermediate Programming. It is a 4 credit hour course and includes a formal lab.
This class is also excellent for the student who needs a broad overview of computer science. This includes students who will be making decisions involving computers in their professions. At this point in time that would probably include everybody.
In this course beginning computer programming is taught. Currently the C++ programming language is used. The students write many programs using the skills that they learn in class.
Although majors can take this course, it is not a requirement. This course is for non-major students who need an introductory programming course.
