John wants to purchase an item that costs $35.00. If the sales tax rate is 6 percent, determine the sales tax and the total cost of the purchase. This problem requires two formulas from the formula list. One to calculate the tax: tax = rate X price, and one to calculate the combined purchase price: total = price + tax. The two formulas are used to create combined table labels.
The formulas can be used directly as the program provided they are "solved" for the "unknown" variables "tax" and "total" as in
tax = rate X price;
total = price + tax;
The order of the statements is important in that the tax must be calculated
by statement one before it is used in statement two. The program can be
given in one line by substituting the side to the right of the "=" in the
first statment in place of "tax" in the second statement. The result is
total = price + (rate X price);
