An employee works 40 hours a week at $6.25 an hour. If he has a 25% deduction, how much is his net pay? This problem asks for net pay and specifies a rate, a time and a deduction percent. Three formulas are required: rate X time = gross wage, (percent/100)Xgross wage = deductions, and gross wage - deductions = net wage. This problem requires the solution of the formulas in a sequence such that the first formula calculates a value required by the later ones. That is, two of the equations require gross wages which are not specified. However, they can be calculated by the first equation since its elements are given. Once gross wages are known, deductions can be calculated and then used to determine net wages. The table is straight forward. The three steps of the solution are maintained in the program to better document the process. The result shows the gross wages and deductions calculated by the program as well as the net wages.
