Why Is Computer Science Important

Computer science is important for many resons. Advancement in many areas involves understanding computers. These advancements in society can include preventing and curing diseases, finding sources of renewable energy, as well as understanding the universe. Computing has become the universal underpinning of scientific advancement and ecomomic activity.

Computer Science also helped start the digital revolution which led to the creation of the Internet.

Computer Science majors will find that the software they write (or the hardware they help fix) makes very tangible differences in the world. For example, consider a typical programmer. Sure they might be using their time to fix a bug in a program, or rewrite a program to run faster, but these fixes translate to an easier life for the user of these programs. If a business uses this software, a speed-up or bug fix in their software could mean higher revenue.

Computer Science majors can contribute to many open-source projects. These projects are programs that are free for anyone to use and redistribute. Because of this, these programs save many people money that they could better spend elsewhere. Consider a family that is low on income. Instead of buying a computer from Best Buy (which range from $400 onwards), they can go to a local computer shop, buy a cheap computer without an operating system, and install the Linux operating system, saving hundreds of dollars.

When open-source programming is rewarding

Software allows users to efficiently use computers. As a Computer Science major, you could help make the normally difficult task of interacting with a computer very easy. Imagine trying to use the laptop or desktop computer you're reading this from without an operating system. Or, imagine programming on a computer in the 1950's. Computer Science majors have made the task of using computers to accomplish tasks far easier than they ever have been.
